In 2014 the Elaine Raphael Arts Fund introduced our first program to bring art into the lives of children.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Inspired by the success of The Weston Playhouse’s (WP) drama workshops for elementary school children, the Elaine Raphael Arts Fund (ERAF) has launched a set and costume design program, Ready, Set, Sew that will run in conjunction with WP’s Early Stages starting April 2014.

According to Don Bolognese, ERAF’s Artistic Director, “Children love working with the professional actors that teach the program. Now they will have the opportunity to explore the art of set and costume design with a professional artist. Hopefully, children who love the theater but are not interested in being onstage will discover that their love of fantasy and adventure will find expression in creating the visual aspects that support the actors.”

In 2014 Ready, Set, Sew will be held in Flood Brook Elementary School, Cavendish Elementary School, Windham Elementary School and Chester-Andover Elementary School.

The Elaine Raphael Fund will provide a grant to each school participating in Early Stages to cover expenses to build inventive sets and outfit the young actors in original costumes.  “This partnership will foster creativity among the students and teachers, not only enhancing our initiative, but also providing a benefit to the entire school community through non-profit collaboration” said Susan Haefner, director, actor and artist in residence with the Weston Playhouse. The ERAF will also be providing volunteer assistance and Mr. Bolognese’s time so each school can create sets and costumes to ensure that performance day will be a rewarding and inspiring experience for students, parents and teachers.
