LOU’s GROWING GREEN

Whether we are growing vegetables or flowers, gardening connects us to nature and provides a multitude of benefits.  Lou’s Growing Green helps promote gardening in schools, senior living centers and to benefit communities-at-large.

About Lou

Lou’s Growing Green program is named in loving memory of our dear friend and mentor Louis Stiglitz.  Lou was a master gardener extraordinaire. Gardening was a labor of love for Lou. His horticulture knowledge knew no bounds as did his generosity of time and expertise. He loved nothing more than seeing others experience the joy of growing flowers and vegetables.  He raised hundreds of tomato plants and flowers of different varieties annually in his greenhouse and donated them to high school garden programs, the local church and friends and family.  Lou was proud of his 25 years of service in the Master Gardener program of Union County.  He was a longtime member of the Springfield Garden Club. He was also a member of the Springfield Historical Society and designed and built a garden at the club’s Cannonball House on Morris Avenue.

Lou’s love of gardening will live on in those he touched during his lifetime and through all those who are impacted by Lou’s Growing Green projects.

Tower Gardens

We are using the Tower Garden®, a state-of-the-art vertical aeroponic growing system to expand gardening into environments where traditional gardening is not feasible, practical or possible, such as schools and senior centers. You don’t need any gardening experience to use Tower Garden® and due to its compact set-up it’s perfect for  rooftops, patios, balconies, terraces — just about any relatively sunny place outside or with a few lights, even inside. We hope to provide Tower Gardens® in numerous classrooms and senior centers to support horticulture educational programs and healthy living.  Contact us if you are interested in having a Tower Garden in your school or community setting.
